RakaTa Crew is Melbourne's hottest reggaeton dance crew that is currently with the Dance and Movement Epidemic (DaMÉ).
The crew is led by Gene Segura and assisted by Tania De Silva. They are two of the four co-directors of DaMÉ. Gene has become a well-known instructor and performer in the Melbourne Latin dance scene due to his respect and passion for reggaeton music and its dance. Tania’s feminine energy is a spicy addition to every reggaeton workshop! Together, Gene and Tania, along with the RakaTa Crew, showcase reggaeton not just as a dance flavour, but as a dance style in its own right!
The crew has exposed the Melbourne Latin scene to reggaeton that is partnered, sexually-charged and true to the way it is danced on the streets. They incorporate all of the influences of reggaeton music into their dancing and choreography. They incorporate elements of Latin and Afro-Latin dance, urban street dance and Jamaican dancehall, embracing both masculine and feminine energies. Not to mention all the grinding and perreo, that without it, there is no reggaeton!!!
Gene and Tania have taught partnered reggaeton workshops, and with the RakaTa Crew, performed at the Melbourne Latin Festival, Adelaide Salsa Festival, Johnston St Hispanic Festival, NZ Pacific Salsa Congress and Sydney Cuban Salsa Congress and were involved in "Destination Cuba", directed by the Cuban master himself, Eric Turro. RakaTa Crew also performed at the first Cubamemucho to be held in Melbourne in 2009. Their fast-paced and unique choreographies have brought RakaTa Crew, local and interstate acclaim.
Gene and his RakaTa Crew continue to showcase reggaeton not just as a dance flavour, but as a dance style in its own right.
