Sauzal

Sauzal Folkloric Dance group was established on the 16th March, 2004. This group emerged to the public life at a time that there was a decline in the Chilean folk ambience in Melbourne. The presence of Sauzal with an innovative style, gave a new drive to the folk activity.

This group is administered by a committee of five members, who are responsible for the care of the most minimum of details, to enable this organisation to accomplish the purpose it was created for.

The dance director is Nilson Gomez Jnr. who has a history of 26 years instructing folk dance groups. He gave Sauzal a new style, creating the most energetic dances and in certain cases, giving the dances a style without losing its origin, making the dances more appealing.

Today the cast of Sauzal is composed of 15 dancers of both genders, with ages ranging from 11 to 40 and above.

This group is characterised by performing dances from three regions of Chile. In the past three years, Sauzal has added traditional dances from other origins such as Diablada and Zambo Caporales which are very popular in the religious festivals held in Northern Chile. To meet this objective, the group has made great economic efforts to import from South America the costumes, masks and authentic accessories.

During the year Sauzal participates in multiple community activities and festivals, the most popular being Moomba.

Sauzal also performs at festivals organised by other ethnic groups and organisations.
